Define diffraction.

→ The phenomenon of bending of light around the corners of an obstacle and spreading into the region of the geometrical shadow is called diffraction.

The diffraction of light produces dark and bright fringes known as diffraction bands or diffraction fringes. All kinds of waves show diffraction to be comparable to the wavelength of the wave.

What are the types of diffraction?

There are two types of diffraction. They are:
  • Fresnel's diffraction
  • Fraunhofer's diffraction

Define Fresnel`s diffraction.

→ The diffraction in which the sources and the screen are at a finite distance from the obstacles is called fresnel`s diffraction.

Usually, no lens or mirror is required to observe it. In this type of diffraction, the incidents as well as the diffracted wavelength are spherical or cylindrical.

Define Fraunhoffer`s diffraction.

→ The diffraction in which the sources and the screen are placed at a greater distance from the obstacle is called Fraunhofer's diffraction.

A converging lens is used to observe it. In this type of diffraction, the incidents as well as the diffracted wavelength are plane.
